Mice Parade - What It Means To Be Left-Handed

Mice Parade fits more into the Brooklyn indie-folk sound more than the shoegaze label that wikipedia applies to them, though "Recover" best combines the folk and indie shoegaze labels applied to them, via Arcade Fire. Opener "Kupanda" features busy guitars playing against 'world beats', while "Do Your Eyes See Sparkles" and "Fortune Of Folly" do the same with rock drums. In "In Between Times"****, Caroline (Lufkin) sings at her most pixie-like, which contrasts nicely with the slashing, punctuated acoustic guitar riffs. Other songs are conventionally Indie, such as "Even", closer "Mary Anne"****, which sounds similar to Kurt Vile (of which Rob Laasko is a member), and "Mallo Cup", so 90's emo I could mistake it for Promise Ring. There are many memorably tuneful parts to enjoy, such as the atmospheric guitar coda of "Couches And Carpets" and the harmonic-tinged guitar breakdown of "Recover". "Old Hat" combines some pretty atmospheric guitar arpeggios and some forceful drumming into not much, while the piano atmospherics of "Tokyo Night" makes nice electronic background music. The frequently underwhelming result is probably due to band leader Adam Pierce's flat, sing-talky vocal delivery. I guess that kinda matters.
