Hot Tuna - The Phosphorescent Rat

I don't know if anyone would have paid attention to Hot Tuna if it wasn't fronted by Jorma Kaukonen. The guitar pickin is competent, especially on the acoustic instrumentals "Seaweed Strut" and "Sally Where'd You Get Your Liquor", but Kaukonen's vocals may not be polished enough for the band's pleasant California rock sound, unnecessarily backed by orchestra on "Corners Without Exits" and "Soliloquy for 2". Due to this mismatch the best tracks are the hardest rocking, including the highly punctuated "Living Just For You"**** and "Easy Now"*****, a loud acid-rocker, where each phrase is emphasized with a badass guitar growl. Opener "I See The Light" also rocks convincingly in the northern California style of Buffalo Springfield / CSNY. Country is also a prominent evidence on the Byrds copy "Letter To The North Star" and "Day to Day Without The Window Blues"****, which rocks up a typical country-blues progression.
