David Bowie - Low

With the volume of opinions about this sacred cow, there is no need to mention Berlin or Eno, as this album was recorded in France anyway. Though the songs on side one are frequently fragmentary, the layers of sound are anything but, as all the descending scratches ("Speed of Life"****), digital hooting ("Breaking Glass"****), the mechanical blips and counterpointing guitar in "What In The world"****, contribute to the sound. "Always Crashing the Same Car"****, which resembles "Heroes" from the next album, and "Be My Wife"**** are more conventional rockers, and single "Sound And Vision" and instrumental "A New Career In A New Town" round out the side. The arty second side contains a couple pleasant soundscapes, but "Waszawa"**** and concluding "Subterraneans"**** range from graceful and contemplative melodies to pagan ritual chants, leaving one disoriented but meditative for a bit.
