Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother -

1x****
Definitely a transitional album, some elements are embryonic origins of sounds on later albums, but some, like the hokey fanfare beginning the "Atom Heart Mother Suite" are an anomaly. This section sounds more like soundtrack music from Tommy or Quadrophenia than any other PF, while the middle instrumental sounds like what would become "Any Colour You Like". The best section is the second section, with its circular structure and slide guitar predating "Echoes". There is also a weird choral section, and of course the fanfare comes back for the last 5 minutes. After all this ambition the pretty, Waters' minimalistic acoustic meditation "If" is refreshing. Wright's "Summer '68"**** is a downright jaunty little piano pop song, where every melodic twist is unexpected. Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun" is pleasant enough background music, and at least it's not the aimless noodling of "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast."
