The Replacements - Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash

5x****
Seemingly taking a cue from Led Zeppelin more than The Ramones, "Takin A Ride"**** kicks off Sorry Ma rather heavily, complete with an arpeggiated bridge most punk bands wouldn't touch. "Customer"**** and "Shutup" expecially have the joyful snottiness that would characterize The Replacements' entire catalog. "Hangin Downtown"**** chugs along simply until the hook at the end of the chorus brings it all together. "Otto"**** is the first of The Replacements' mock-hoedowns, with a flippant lead riff. The only time the tempo lets up is "Johnny's Gonna Die", the first of many sparse loungy numbers executed in rickety ments fashion. The relatively produced "Shiftless When Idle" sounds made for the radio but doesn't fit together too well. "I'm In Trouble"**** carries its catchy descending riff through this bottom-heavy rocker. Most of the album suffers from a looseness that excessively obscures the ments surprising musicality, but the hard-rocking "Kick Your Door Down","Somethin to Du", and "Raised In The City" especially suffer, but when the production matches the complexity of the songs, the energy is infectious.
