Low - Things We Lost In The Fire

3x****
Not a sound to set the world ablaze, but the intensely mellow "Sunflower"**** is a simple, beautiful opener. "Whitetail" almost sinisterly pulses out a constant, simple dirge. "Dinosaur Act"**** is a more traditional rock song with a chorus powerful in its fullness. "Medicine Magazines"**** has a looser feel and sung with wide open spaces and odd timing that actually is in 4, though it seems off.
The percussion-less "Laser Beam" is beautifully sung and played, but pushes the bounds of ethereal. The chorus of "July" may even be described as grungy. The remaining songs incorporate elements of the preceding tracks, from the sparse "Embrace", to a grungy "Whore" and "Like A Forest". With its tight vocal harmonies "Kind Of Girl" is best set in the coffee shop. The album summation of "Closer" is a late-album highlight. While "In Metal" ends with a big finish, Very pretty mellow-out music if there ever was any, though impatience is a possible result unless heavily sedated.
