Jawbox - Grippe

3x****
The opening "Freezerburn" is a bit of an overcomplicated but interesting mid-tempo rocker, while "Impossible Figure" is closer to the emo that bands like Braid would later imitate. But "Tools And Chrome"**** ratchets up the sound with a catchy riff out of the gate, while "Paint Out The Light"**** again has the emo voicings and textures that would influence many (copied almost note-for-note by Braid/Hey Mercedes), and the eerie verse melody of "Grip"**** transitions satisfyingly to the melodic chorus. Side 2 continues in much the same vein, though less memorable. "Bullet Park" features a Fugazi-like machine gun riff. However, later albums would just improve, and obviously many of the sounds that would start a genre are here.
