Beat Happening - You Turn Me On

4x****
Easy to like with a more polished and fuller sound than previous albums, and still an acquired taste due to Calvin's voice, the last album is consistently enjoyable. "Tiger Trap"**** is a slow opener with a good combination of circular chord structure and memorable melody. "Noise" is a more typical head-bobber. "Sleepy Head"**** is a slightly stronger Heather Lewis song, and "Godsend"**** is beautiful with the multiple layers of guitar and vocal harmonies. "Pinebox Derby" and "You Turn Me On" are Calvin's big dumb garage rock songs, while "Teenage Caveman" is retro 60's. "Hey Day"**** is a bit out of character straight indie-rock song. The poppy closer "Bury The Hammer"**** is 6 minutes but doesn't seem like it, with a winning combination of vocal melodies, and manages to increase intensity in the chorus with a simple drum fill.
