Joe Tex - 25 All Time Greatest Hits

4x**** 1x*****
Joe Tex has a few types of songs. First there are the lesson, preach-it-brother songs, such as "Hold What You've Got", "You Better Get It", which are by-God exactly the same song and complete opposite, yes they are, yes they are. Joe has more pointers on "Don't Let Your Left Hand Know What Your Right Hand Is Doing", "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show". Most of the songs from 65 and 66 lean more towards more standard soul, except for "SYSLJFM", which is much more poppy, and consists of taking the first letters of the lyrics, and then singning them - pretty lame gimmick; "...Left Hand...." and the more gritty "Papa Was Too"**** are more R&B. "I Believe I'm Gonna Make It" is an imaginary letter from a guy in Vietnam to his honey. In 67 he moves toward more R&B, such as "Show Me", and "Woman Like That Yeah". He clowns onstage on "Skinny Legs and All", and "Men Are Gettin Scarce"****. Some songs could have used an outside opinion to say that, hey these words are kinda dopey, such as repeating "Don't let your right hand know....." a dozen times, or loving his lip, hip, toe, and elbow in "I'll Never Do You Wrong", or half a dozen others where the chorus is just the title, then mm-hmm, mm-hmm. But my favorite songs are the funk, "You Said A Bad Word"**** and "I Gotcha"***** (why does it make me want to torture a cop?), where he'll try any trick to get a little. "You Need Me Baby"**** cleverly makes the case that he maybe he's better than the flashy guy, jokingly firing "I'm putting a vote in for me". The last song is disco, "Ain't Gonna Bump No More With A Big Fat Woman", one of his amusing anecdote songs.
