Talking Heads - Fear of Music

1x*****, 5x****
Next in the Sacred Cows series, Fear of Music starts with African-sounding "I Zimbra", with a polyrhythm and a multitude of short, fast riffs, which builds to a strange keyboard pattern. "Mind" is slow and unremarkable, but the frantic pace of the classic "Cities" leaves David so he has to shout a bit to keep up. With that great lead-in, the familiarity of "Life During Warfare" is just gravy. "Memories Can't Wait" is much harder and has a great foreboding feel. "Air" turns another corner with strange David Bowie verses turning to melodic choruses. "Heaven" turns more melodic, and the choruses take a nice minor turn. The album ends by turning darker with "Electric Guitar" and the strange (David Bowie) Low-era "Drugs", which are fine songs, but not ones I'd go back to.
