Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

1x*****, 3x****
Some things change, such as the new-new wave songs, but some things stay the same. "We've Got Everything" could be Franz Ferdinand if it was less strange. The great single "Dashboard" and greater "Florida" turn even more to the 80's/disco tempo. But it also has plenty of the familiar strange mid-tempo songs such as "March Into the Sea" and "Parting of the Sensory", and "Steam Eugenius". "Fire It Up" wears especially thin. But "Spitting Venom" starts with the sound of an army stomping the street, and switches to a chiming ending. And "Little Motel" has an especially floaty ending with a solo of bending, melting notes. Overall the contributions of Johnny Marr are not at all obvious.
