The debut album provides a reasonable approximation of what the band will continue to sound like, mostly 3-chord ditties with varying degrees of fuzz and reverb, borrowing heavily from two retro-British influences, British invasion jangle and shoegazer. After a quirky introduction, "The Dandy Warhols' T.V. Theme Song"**** makes a splashy entrance with a simple punchy riff. Sampling shoegazer, with the very on-the-nose "Ride" and "Best Friend", 60's psychedelic "Not Your Bottle" and "The Coffee And Tea Wrecks" (the latter complete with backwards guitar solo), and 60's jangle "Nothin' To Do" and "(Tony, This Song Is Called) Lou Weed" (again, too on-the-nose), the album's first half is a decent if not exceptional collection. The 6-minute "Genius" kicks off a several track stretch in homage to the deliberate, reverb-y jangle of contemporaries Brian Jonestown Massacre. Closing out with interminable jams "It's a Fast Driving Rave-Up with The Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes" and "Finale: It's a Fast Driving Rave-Up with The Dandy Warhols" (which includes the sunny, sitar-y hidden track), the second half of the album suffers in comparison to what came before, except for the bouncy (it's the Jew's harp) "Grunge Betty"****. Unfortunately too much filler pushes the album just over 74 minutes, when only about 30 are reasonably focused and consistent.
