Sun Kill Moon - April

From the mournful "Lucky Man" to the anxious "Heron Blue" April is an album of beautiful finger -picking and uncomplicated arrangements. The opener "Lost Verses" is one exception, more Gordon Lightfoot light-rock. Another of Mark Kozelek's touchstones is Neil Young's crunchy folk chords, such as on "The Light" and the ominous, droning "Tonight The Sky"**** (the main riff inspired by "Ohio")  - a bit excessive at over 10-minutes but an extra star for an unsettling one-note guitar rant. The flowing "Moorestown"**** and "Tonight In Bilbao"**** are the best moments on the album, tastefully completed by Koutsos and Stanfield on drums and bass, and some beautifully subtle orchestration. The bonus disc that came with my copy consists of solo versions of 4 full-band songs.
