Bare Trees was the last album to feature both Danny Kirwan and Bob Welch, and with additional contributions by Christine McVie, the competition must have been fierce. Kirwan scored the poppy blues rockers "Child Of Mine"**** and title track "Bare Trees"**** (borrowing heavily from "Killing Floor"), as well as the radiant instrumental "Sunny Side of Heaven" ****. Welch's less-polished vocals hinder his jazzy "The Ghost", but his "Sentimental Lady"**** is probably the album's best-known song, as the re-recorded version for his debut solo album would later reach the top 10. Bare Trees is only the third album to feature Christine McVie; perhaps consequently her two songs, "Homeward Bound" and "Spare Me a Little of Your Love" aren't her best, though her stature as an artist would later far eclipse Kirwan and Welch. The album closes with another Kirwan track, the folky, contemplative "Dust"****. Too bad the Welch-era albums seem to have been swept under the rugs of both radio and rock history (except for "Sentimental Lady"), as this one is consistent enough to warrant recognition.
