For an album of songs that I mostly hadn't heard (only the closing track is on their 2003 compilation), it has more than its share of quality tracks, and even the plentiful filter is listenable. The anthemic-ally melodic opening track "Wished I Was A Giant"**** and the aforementioned closer "Non-Absorbing"**** (do you see me, doo doo doo doo, like I see you, doo doo doo doo), an ear-worm of a 1:37 jingle, both worthy of Bob's favorite muse The Who. Others include "Expecting Brainchild"**** and "Unstable Journey"****, both of which crush with distorted bombacity; "Dusted"****, with a pounding drum beat similar to "Motor Away"; the English ren-fair fanfare of "Marchers In Orange"; stately rocker "Sot"; and short but sweet "Jar Of Cardinals"**** (similar to "Echoes Myron"). Sprout's contributions include the tossed-off acoustic "Donkey School" and the earnest "Gleemer (The Deeds Of Fertile Jim)." Lo-fi rightly can be used to describe all the songs here, but it's no more so than classic GBV albums like Propeller and Bee Thousand.
