Old 97's - Fight Songs

I'm finally getting around to an album from 1999. Here's to being current. Opener "Jagged"**** alone has the angry buzz of early Uncle Tupelo or Drive By Truckers, but doesn't matter - some of the best tracks are to come. Actually, "What We Talk About"**** is pretty tough for a tango, and even pop songs with church bells ("Oppenheimer") have some pretty rocking guitars. "Lonely Holiday"**** is much more subtle after the intro, and the harmonies throughout elevate this especially well-written track. "Nineteen"**** screams single to me, but I must have weird tastes to think that of a song buried almost at the end of the album. It's dumb enough to be John Cougar Mellencamp, and twice as fun. Twang-countrified "Let The Idiot Speak"**** is another fun throwaway that hauls ass. But these are hardly the only quality tracks the album has, and it definitely stands up to any of its contemporaries by the Jayhawks or Uncle Tupelo, etc.
