To be honest I do not have the Tribes of Neurot album that is to accompany this one, but with the density of sound on this record I didn't feel like I was missing something. Being an atmospheric metal record most of the memorable parts come as movements within some pretty lengthy songs, but really, when a riff or theme is cool enough, sometimes I want to live in it for awhile. "The Doorway"**** is a terrifying trip through a gauntlet devil chords, while "Under The Surface"**** adds some scary tribal drumming. "The Last You'll Know" is more like 9-minutes of soundtrack to a psychedelic film than a structured song, similar to early Pink Floyd, leading into the relatively short "Belief"****, which seems to be based around the sound of a tormented robot on a deserted planet. The middle of the album alternates between sonic sketches like "The Last You'll Know" and structured songs; it's also less heavy, building to loud passages in limited doses. There are some cool parts, like the distorted, mechanical breathing on "Away", similar to the Hospice album by the Antlers, but the lighter parts lack the power of the early rockers. The final shot at bombast comes in the form of the title song, which is particularly monotonous. The closing funeral march "The Road To Sovereignty" is the best of the instrumentals, fittingly ending with sound of film flapping against a film projector at the end of a movie.
