The combination of Kozelek's melodies and monumental guitar arpeggios are the standard ingredients for most of the tracks, but the best have an element of mystery, such as the the confusing spectral wailing that ends opener "Evil"**** and the confusion or doubt of their cover of "I Am A Rock"****. "Helicopter"**** also evolves from stately to tense as the chords climb but only to the next perch. These more expansive songs are more Cocteau Twins or Smashing Pumpkins than folky. Tightly arranged "New Jersey"**** has hooks and the most singalong potential, "You're as good as dead, New Jersey ain't the whole world", but the album trails off from here, concluding with an interesting but forced arrangement of the national anthem.
