Radiohead - The King Of Limbs

Another album as frustrating as Kid A and Amnesiac, heavy on the experimentation and light of the songs, The King Of Limbs has both gems and garbage. "Bloom" and "Feral" both hang a repetitive guitar blurb, the latter a particularly good example of the entire band circle jerking with samplers - worse than any electronic noodling I disliked on Kid A. That said, "Little By Little"****, similar to "Optimistic", is as close to a single as it gets, though any of the live versions I have seen sound better. Maybe "Lotus Flower" got the airplay because it's easier to dance to, but it's certainly less substantial. As if to prove that the albums are to be taken as a whole, the best tracks are hidden at the end. Contemplative ballad "Codex" rescues the album melodically (though maybe it should have been swapped out for "The Daily Mail"), and closer "Separator"**** includes the subtle and sensitive arrangement that made In Rainbows as stealthfully engrossing as it was. But "Give Up The Ghost"***** is the album's masterpiece, beauty building almost imperceptibly from a stark prayer to lush choir; whatever its true meaning, its sonics are unequivocally spiritual.
