The power of producer Daniel Lanois is strong on this album, especially on the spacious and droning "Most Of The Time"****, which sounds familiar to anyone with a passing knowledge of U2. It sounds great, but it's the vulnerability of the author's inability to fully heal that makes it interesting. Atmosphere is also heavy on fittingly mysterious "Man In The Long Black Coat" and throwaway "What Was It You Wanted". The big single as I remember was "Everything Is Broken", a humorous CCR-influenced list of broken objects. Similarly swampy opener "Political World"**** is more rocking and lyrically illustrative, though not much more insightful. More themes of trouble in the world appear on the slight "Disease Of Conceit", though gospel ballad "Ring Them Bells" hopes for something better. Ballads "Where Teardrops Fall", "What Good Am I?", and "Shooting Star" fill out the rest of the album.
