Arcade Fire - Funeral

After nearly 9 years of indie-rock domination, discarding opinions formed by seeing several amazing live performances isn't easy. Outside of that context the masterfully building "Neighborhood - Tunnels"**** holds up, while the harsh, angular "Neighborhood - Laika" doesn't. The subtle, pretty "Une Annee Sans Lumiere" is an interesting break in intensity before the roar of  "Neighborhood - Power Out"*****, though it would be better without the tacked-on rock coda. Springsteen-y ballad "Neighborhood 4 - Kettles" closes out an uneven first side. It's always a little mystifying when the second side of an album picks up the slack for the first, but the 'ballads' make greater use of the band's orchestral capabilities, "Wake Up"**** combines the band's rock and orchestral aspects in emotional, militant fashion, while "Rebellion (Lies)***** delivers the album's second scream-along masterpiece. A damn near perfect album, Funeral sets a difficult standard for any band to duplicate.
