As limited as the sound of the Apples In Stereo might be, this album of odds and sods does provide a few surprises. "The Apples Theme Song" and "Steven" are curious artifacts, though throwaways in and of themselves. "Shine In Your Mind" (a Fun Trick Noisemaker bonus track) fits well with the eerie, psychedelic direction at the time due to the distant, indifferently out-of-tune piano. The humorously reproachful "Man You Gotta Get Up"**** and "Golden Flower" (Tone Soul Evolution LP bonus tracks)likewise sound of the time, though their exclusion on the album wasn't any tragedy. Likewise "Avril En Mai" and the World Inside The Moone bonus tracks are so low key as to be instantly forgettable, especially the lame coffeehouse strummer "Hold On To This Day". The big surprise is a gleeful, headbanging gem "On Your Own"*****, which was relegated to some limited run CD-R comp. Also, the Nuggets psychedelia "So Far Away"**** sounds like a long lost outtake from Her Wallpaper Reverie, especially in the dense, mind-altering Beatle-esque outro. The fact that both of these songs were both released near the time of the Apples' only lackluster album, Velocity Of Sound is what puzzles me. Though they can't all be winners, Electronic Projects serves its purpose, while showing that the main albums were the essential heart of the Apples' catalog.
