Swervedriver - Raise

It takes a little bit to get going, as the riffs of opening "Sci-Flyer" and "Pile-Up" seem unfocused and jammy, the latter resembling Green Mind-era Dinosaur Junior. But "Son Of A Mustang Ford"***** evokes nothing short of a demolition derby, with an instantly memorable stuttering riff. The focus slides once again on "Deep Seat" and its long, meandering instrumental sections, and the lazy repetition in "Rave Down", whatever that means. Despite its flaws, it's differentiated from the typical shoegazer buzz by alternating punchy accents with guitar textures, as does "Sunset"****. "Feel So Real" is probably the most straightforward track, keeping a steady cruising feel. While the odd chord progression of "Sandblasted"**** , which resembles The Who's "My Wife", was for some reason the hardest to follow, especially with the bridge tempo change and muddled solo, it makes one of the better riffs. Thought closing "Lead Me Where You Dare"**** really doesn't go beyond its spacey groove, it's a great sound to close with.
