Belle & Sebastian - Storytelling

Even for an album that's really a soundtrack that didn't pan out, the high points are pretty sparse. The main theme ("Fiction", reprise, and "Nightwalk") are pleasant enough, but the dialogue snippets are probably not well-chosen and create a tedious backdrop. Oddly, one of my favorite tracks is the casual instrumental "Fuck This Shit"****, a successful blending of the Midnight Cowboy Theme and The Carpenters' "Close To You". "Black And White Unite"**** borrows some good tricks from Simon & Garfunkel, or The Grateful Dead when they're keeping it short. The title song and "Wandering Alone" are a couple more jaunty 60's pop tunes, the latter very Kinks, and "Scooby Driver" does a good Partridge Family impression, though none are really among B&S's best. "I Don't Want To Play Football" seems inspired by "Stars Of Track And Field" though this is a downer lament. And "Big John Shaft" may have inspired "If She Wants Me" on the next album. Minus the instrumental filler and dialogue, most of the album is at least passable, but good thing this didn't seem to be marketed as a legitimate album effort, because it's not.
