Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

keepers - 3
At Mount Zoomer seems to occupy a kind of pre-pop sell-out Genesis, sometimes straightforward, but always with well-executed arty touches. "Fine Young Cannibals"**** shares similarities with Genesis' "Home By The Sea" in its interweaving of angular and melodic elements. "Soldier's Grin", the opening track layers snappier parts similar to The Strokes, while "Language City" and "The Grey Estates" are more keyboard-driven and feel more like Squeeze. The more spooky tracks, though, have the more impressive moments, such as the machine gun blasts of guitar fading into a hazy keyboard in "Call It A Ritual"****, or the Television instrumental outro in "An Animal In Your Care"****. While the hooks are usually so dense they can be elusive, only "Bang Your Drum" seems over-complicated and threatening to fall apart. "Kissing The Beehive" follows the fine tradition of the album-closing epic evolving from a deliberate march to a an angular jam, separated by a dramatic stop that should make fans of old Genesis happy.
