Billed as the starting point of the Mastodon 'legacy', Call of the Mastodon seems to be a sonic representation of clawing its way out of the depths. Guitars scream and Hinds gurgles, until finally "Battle At Sea"**** calms down to a rustic riff and breaks wide open a dizzying melodic riff. "Deep Sea Creature"**** is equally impressive with melody and precision of the best of Megadeth. "Sickleg"**** builds from early Soundgarden or High on Fire sludge metal. The title song, like "Battle At Sea" has some 'southern licks' hiding in the noise, and the stomping verses evoke an ideal live setting.
