Le Tigre - This Island

"On The Verge" and the breakneck "Seconds"**** set the energy bar high. Next "Don't Drink Poison"**** pleads with thrash guitar, and "After Dark" would make a great 80's dance classic. After this the album is hit and miss, as "Tell You Now" and "Sixteen" are respectable mid-tempo tunes, but "Viz" is of interest to LGBT only due to a clunky chorus, and "New Kicks" pounds a political agenda in with protest samples, making a well-meaning philosophy of restoring democracy annoying. And speaking of 80's dance classics, the cover of "I'm So Excited" sounds like an amateur You Tube project and completely unnecessary. The title song**** nicely creates a frantic setting describing NYC, and "Punker Plus"**** basically sets the tour diary to music - the Devo stiffness is a bit odd for a closing track, but the shouted delivery has some good lines.
