Sunny Day Real Estate - "The Pink Album"

keepers - 3
While the first album dated badly with a generic Creed sound, the second is more interesting, kicked off by anthemic/dramatic "Friday"**** and "Theo B"****, whose complex drumming and melodic picking would become the staples of early emo. "8"****, which also appeared on a big Hollywood soundtrack, shares the intense drama of "Friday". The middle of the album sags a bit with generic power ballads "5/4" and "Waffle". This more experimental direction pays off better with "Iscarabaid", whole pounding, angular riffing is almost menacing, and somewhat awkwardly structured "J'nuh". Straightforward and poppy "Rodeo Jones" is a bit generic for an album-ender, but the sound would still be influential.
