Belle & Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap

For such a provocatively named album, there's little here that would shake up lovers of If You're Feeling Sinister", as "It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career" nearly reflects "Stars Of Track And Field", and the steady electronic pulse and mellow keyboards of "Sleep The Clock Around"**** also sound familiar. Vocals other than Stuart Murdoch are a new factor here, but Isobel Campbell's vocal on "Is It Wicked Not To Care"**** complements the familiar B & S sound nicely, and the Jackson-led "Chickfactor"**** makes nice late-60's orchestral pop. The middle does lag a bit, as Jackson's "Seymours Stein" is pleasant, but takes until the last minute to pull together, and the instrumental "A Space Boy Dream" isn't really necessary. But "Dirty Dream Number Two" has a bit more drive than most, and the title song**** has a bit more late-Beatles rock than B & S has had before, keeping the album from getting too sleepy. "A Summer Wasting"**** is another nice piece of ear candy until the breaks at the end of each chorus give the song new life. With only the exceptions I mentioned, there is not a bad note here, and lazily sliding guitars leading out "The Rollercoaster Ride" have a lasting vibe unlike the song's abrupt ending.
