Wipers - Over The Edge

7x****
When even the lesser tracks on this record have catchy hooks, such "Messenger", or truly artful playing on the highly dynamic "The Lonely One", picking standout tracks isn't even relevant here. Right from the start "Over The Edge"**** has aggression that the brittle guitars can bring, and a layered sound, both melodic and drone-y, a tighter Sonic Youth. The wavering guitars of "So Young"**** and "No Wants An Alien"**** have a liquid quality, while the angular riffs of "Now Is The Time"**** resemble a more-focused Mission Of Burma. "Romeo" is sort of an oddball here, an urban rockabilly -punk with lots of slide guitar. But this consistent mix of power and melody never let up, until the relentlessly chugging "This Time"**** ends too soon.
