The Flaming Lips - Hear It Is

1x****
The lines "When I walk with you I feel weird, when I talk with you" is as good as corny and sincere opener "With You" gets, which is overall not a good sign. "Unplugged" and the happier "Trains, Brains, & Rain" come close to early Replacements sound, but already they have moved beyond girls and stupid parents lyrically. "Jesus Shootin Heroin" may be the most attention grabbing song title of all time, but but this muddy vaguely Floydian dirge doesn't have a single hook to back it up. "Just Like Before"**** on the other hand kicks off with an eerie Helter Skelter riff and pounds menacingly until each chorus is brilliantly accented by a cool stop-start. Side 2 doesn't really have anything to redeem it, and "Godzilla Flick" is egregiously stupid, though the droning psychedelia of "She Is Death" serves as a good idea to be improved on Hit To Death In The Future Head, particularly "Felt Good To Burn". The side ends with another Replacements copy "Staring At Sound", and is fittingly book-ended by a reprise of the lousy "With You", which renders the side almost a complete loss.
