Single "Freak Scene"**** wastes no time with the hooks, with some pretty harsh guitar sounds after the verses. "No Bones" is more subdued and jammy in approach, its meandering vocal and bass lines hinting at later bands like Pearl Jam, while the last run through the verse is devoted to guitar noise. "Yeah We Know"**** adds some more textures with heavy wah and toms, and also J's stacked chords. Most of the rest of the album is devoted to punk tempos, but with a couple exceptions. "Pond Song" is quick but trading volume for both more melodic singing and playing. "The Post" goes for maximum sludge, but the sheer force of J and Lou's opening scream in "Don't"***** sets a new standard for intensity, as Lou's cries desperately fight though J's sonic maelstrom. It's harrowing but damned if it isn't cathartic.
