Eric Clapton - Me & Mr. Johnson

1x****
How long has Eric been waiting to take on this guy? Given the fact that Robert filled so much musical space by himself, Eric's big band versions are occasionally bombastic, especially "Milkcow's Calf Blues" that tries too hard to be big, while the fast songs, "They're Red Hot" and "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" sound like ragtime and a bit silly. Some of these attempts do come off better than others. The deliver of "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" at least sounds like it was fun, though it's not even as good as the Stones' gritty version. "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day" fits the song well, though not much different from the version of "Rolling And Tumbling" he already did. "Love In Vain" also doesn't come close to topping the Stones. Playing the closing "Hell Hound On My Trail"**** ultra-slow actually pays off, distinguishing itself from the other unsurprising interpretations by slowly tripping along without being sludgy.
