The Detroit Cobras - Mink, Rat, or Rabbit

2x****
Thought "Cha Cha Twist" is kind of a generic beginning, as it is only a slight rewrite of "The Twist", it has the dry garage production and great guitar sound that lifts it far above the new crop of garage rock bands. Backing vocals give "Easier To Cry"**** an extra push, and the rockabilly bridge is like a bonus. The equally moody "Midnight Blues" is as restrained as "Easier" is intense. "Can't Do Without You"**** and the memorable "might as well end my misery" line are another high point. The fast songs particularly don't have this kind of character and generally don't work as well. Most songs don't stray far from the blues progression and predictable structures, and the instrumental "Chumbawa" is kind of a waste without Rachel Nagy's vocals, but the punky production keeps it a fun listen.
