The Black Angels - Directions To See A Ghost

2x****
Droney goth is what you hear on the first track, and that's basically what you get. It's a great sound, but most songs have too few ideas for this album to really be considered finished. Opener "You On The Run"**** at least builds some rocknroll bravado that sounds pretty cool. There is not much variation from song to song is save very small elements, like the shakers in "Science Killer", as each song seems an experiment in what cool effects will make another 5-minute vamp sound really cool. "Doves" is actually one of the more tuneful songs, and "Deer-Ree-Shee" manages to move beyond the E-flat a bit, but some like "Mission District" and "Vikings" are espcially monotonous. While "You In Color" has some especially cool guitar sounds, late track "The Return"**** has the most going on, with a more Brian Jonestown Massacre instrumental layering; it is also the only song not sung by Alex Maas. Closer "Snake In The Grass" does have a killer groove, and a pretty demonic scream at 5:40, but 16 minutes of a B chord is unnecessary.
