Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

3x****
The smooth-jazzy "Too High" is an interesting choice for an album opener. There are a couple interesing hooks, and the instrumental break is especially well-played. "Visions" is even mellower, and the subtle instrumentation leaves plenty of room for the vocal, but asserts itself when necessary. Single "Living For The City"**** is the first rocker, with the stories of urban struggle over a simple, driving line that ends at with the surprisingly complex hook. "Golden Lady" sounds like a poppy predecessor to "Overjoyed". Side 2 kicks off with funky classic "Higher Ground"****. Mellow boogie "Jesus children Of America" would fit well as police-drama soundtrack music, and almost resembles Traffic. "All In Love Is Fair" works well as a traditional torch ballad. Fortunately the end picks up with "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing", a fun samba and "He's Misstra Know It All"****, which is kind of piano pop that might have inspired Ben Folds.
