Don Caballero - What Burns Never Returns

1x****
Skilled playing abounds, especially the drums, but as almost 10 minutes of "Don caballero 3" demonstrates, not much in the way of songs. Most of it seems like an exercise in picking tricks. "Slice Where You Live Like Pie" starts with some of the same oddly timed, cyclical riffs, but at about 1:40 the song abruptly changes to a celebration of shreiking noise guitar like old Poster Children and Hum, and doesn't let up from there. "Delivering The Groceries At 138 Beats Per Minute" has an interesting interplay of guitar textures but no tune for most of it. "Room Temperature Suite" seems intent of recreating as many types of mechanical noise as possible in 5 minutes. "June Is Finally Here" contains a few actual tunes, but the rest of the album is more about skill than accessibility.
