Giant Step - Headstrong EP

1x****
Opener "Wait"**** is chockful of riffs and textures that will take you back to the earlier days of Stone Temple Pilots, and fortunately its catchiness outweighs the derivativeness (word?). The title song highlights the fact that this band sounds tighter and cleaner than any grunge band, and is more similar to Menthol. I do recall that STP did change sound a bit by the Tiny Music album, and "Fast" isn't too far off, though this is more urgent and dark, with its pervasive two-note riff. "The A List" has the funk and sonic space, similar to "Headstrong"; the main riff is a bit to showy and fleeting to carry this song. Closer "To Have It All" again is like a cleaner, more-produced Menthol, and is the second-most interesting song melodically.
