Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit

4x****
"Act Of The Apostle"**** is a very promising beginning, with a jaunty piano riff and 60's influenced harmonies. "Another Sunny Day" has more of an REM, Bryds feel, but "White Collar Boy"**** is anchored by synth, and embellished by production like the previous record, which is no problem with this strong song. Launderette-based "The Blues Are Still Blue" has an almost Stones feel, but "Dress Up In You"**** goes back to a familiar B&S sound from Sinister, with a nice 'so fuck them too' zinger, while "Song For Sunshine"**** is almost as cool as 70's Stevie Wonder with the Superstitious keyboard part, with a bonus anthemic chorus. "Sukie In the Graveyard" and "For The Price Of A Cup Of Tea" have producation and feel similar to Bowie's "Young Americans", with a fast, syncopated feel. Though "Morning Crescent" has a hint of The Faces, it's a yawn, as is the first part of "Act Of The Apostle II". While still working through the last album's soupy production, there are some better, more understated songs here.
