Antony & The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now

3x****
Beginning with beautiful "Hope There's Someone"****, which builds from a simple verse and plaintive chorus to a grand piano crescendo, there are some expectations. After experiencing this sonic palate, "My Lady Story" seems like a cheesy jingle; likewise "For Today I Am A Boy", which is more irritatingly repetitive. The stronger tracks come later in the album; "Fistful Of Love"**** ,starring voice and guitar of Lou Reed and some wailing horns, is closest to driving gospel. And sublimely arranged ballad "Spiraling"**** is aptly named. The rest is neither exceptional nor bad; pretty and light, with a little Rufus Wainright and Boy George thrown in.
