Swervedriver - Mezcal Head

1x***** 5x****
This very consistent album starts angular and grungy "For Seeking Heat"****, which makes the atmospheric chorus melody surprising and welcome. "Duel" isn't noteworthy melodically, but the layered outro makes up for it. "Blowin Cool" comes off as a weaker song by Ride (also ending "You Find It Everywhere"), and "MM Abduction" steps back in tempo but ends up at the typical volume. Finally "Last Train To Satansville"**** brings both strong riffs, melodies, and a strong groove, while "Harry and Maggie" features an instantly memorable riff, the song itself is not very well ordered, and the main riff just becomes a motif without context. "A Change Is Gonna Come" and "Girl On A Motorbike" are memorable and coherent, but the slow-building "Duress"**** combines a prominent high-end with a low groove in a kind of hypnotic trip. Bonus single "Never Lose That Feeling"**** has the sound of a melody that is bent (most of the end jam could have been left off though). "Planes Over The Skyline"***** layers on melody on melody to its triumphant chorus. Bonus track "The Hitcher"**** has melodic sense worthy of Dinosaur Jr, while "Cars Converge In Paris"**** ends on a mellow note similar to Spiritualized with guitar by (The Verve) Nick McCabe.
