Spiritualized - Songs In A & E

2x****
"Sweet Talk" opens the album with a kind of gospel doo-wop, building its light, dreamy layers in typical Spiritulaized fashion. But "Death Take Your Fiddle"**** quickly dives to the edge and only gradually crawls out. "I Gotta Fire"**** shows the author fighting back, starting with drums and sparse instrumentation, but adding brass for momentum. "Soul On Fire" is unfortunately and uninspired version of the languid gospel-folk that dominates Let It Come Down and Amazing Grace. "Yeah Yeah"(bluesy) and "You Lie You Cheat"(britpop) try to rock, but are too muddled. "Baby I'm Just A Fool" is another folky ditty, but "The Waves Crash In" embraces the almost Disney-like orchestral sound. "Goodnight Goodnight" ends with an appropriate lullaby to end this subdued album.
