Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Great Destroyer?

2x****
With wit and hooks, and geeky awkwardness, the songs are interesting and quirky. "Suffer For Fashion" is straightforward techno-pop, while the next two slow it down, "Cato As A Pun" almost a dirge with a quirky guitar lick. "Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse" is a schizophrenic series of parts of pulsing chords alternating with melodic techno as the "mood shift"s wait for the "chemicals". The 12-minute "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal"**** is an expressive narrative over an insistent groove which gives way to some infectious oo-oo-oo's. The following "Bunny Aint No Kind Of Rider" and "Faberge Falls For Shuggie" are the sillier songs, the funky latter song filled with samples and noise. "She's A Rejector"**** is supported by a memorable 80's riff which breaks down into the distressed exclamation of the chorus. Closing "We Were born The Mutants Again With Leaving" is a mellow but less than memorable ending.
