3x***** 2x****
As inconsistent as any GBV album, Propeller has more than its share of moments. The triumphant Who-based "Over The Neptune"***** propels its simple descending riff. "Weedking" also could have been by The Who, but is more bombastic. "Quality Of Armor"***** (oh yeah I'm going to drive my car) is perfect for just that and way too short. "Metal Mothers"***** is similar in feel to "Over The Neptune", but instead of breaking down, it meanders its way to a big rock coda and screaming guitar solo whose melody sounds like its biting its own ass. Also included are the trashy lo-fi "Exit Flagger"**** and the wistful "14 Cheerleader Coldfront"****. "Ergo Space Pig" is also memorable for the jokey use of wah and its joyful meatheadedness, though not much of a song. But for every "Exit Flagger" there are undeveloped sketches like "Particular Damaged" and "Lethargy" that need not have been included. Or is "Lethargy" genius? Impossible to tell.
