Deerhoof - The Runners Four

2x****
Deerhoof definitely brings interesting musicianship, but with a singer with such a lousy, cutesy, self-consciously quirky delivery, it feels like being put on. On Stereolab-like "Running Thoughts" she comes the closest to genuine singing. The keyboards of "You Can See" also resemble Stereolab. "Wrong Time Capsule"**** brings such a straighforward rock riff that the singing can be ignored, while "Siriustar"**** lopes into a rocker worthy of White Stripes, but that every time devolves deeper into chaos before refocusing. "Spirit Ditties Of No Tone" has definite new wave elements. While the tension between catchiness and experimentation, endless complexity, and certain grating elements, the songs are memorable but offputting at the same time.
