The Complete Works of Goober And The Peas

6x****
Cowpunk? Psychobilly? For better or worse, most of the best moments skate dangerously close to novelty. "Dear Grampa"**** and reprise**** both are hilarious countrified ditties, as is the swinging "Druthers"**** - any song where Goober whoops or hollers is an instant classic; except for "Funky Cowboy", which despite some great moments is irritatingly obvious. The most interesting variety is the black-humored psychobilly, such as "Up The Stairs"****, "Don't Be Afraid"****, and "Let's Go Hunt For Grandpa"****. "Hot Women (Cold Beer"****, which sounds similar to fIREHOSE, is straightforward and about as enlightened as the title sounds, but should have been a summer classic. Other songs are merely straightforward alternative; "My Own Best Friend", "If You Want Me", and "It'll Getcha" could have been written by Blind Mellon, while other have more rockabilly or country sound, "Consider Me", "Garden", and harder rocking "The Ballad Of Ms. Amichi". But the more humorous elements will bring the most pleasure after repeated listens.
