The Chesterfield Kings - The Mindbending Sounds Of The Chesterfield Kings

3x****
With snarling vocal delivery and a comprehensively garage rock sound, the Chesterfield Kings definitely set a mood. "I Don't Understand" kicks off with a thumping beat and 12-string, and the attitude is established with a cigarette, and "Running Through My Nightmares" follows with the same formula but less eloquently. "Somewhere Nowhere"**** is a bit of an anomaly in its poppy tone delivered by the happily chiming 12-string. The Stones-y "Trip Through Tomorrow"**** is as close to mind-bending as this album gets, and rocks convincingly coming out of the verse-ending breakdowns. "Transparent Life" on the other hand is an unnecessary re-write of "Paint It Black", as "Flashback" even more blatantly rips off "Jumpin Jack Flash". "Death Is The Only Real Thing" sets this fatalistic sentiment against a loud Bo-Diddley beat. "Disconnection" is one of the more 'psychedelic' songs with the snaky main riff. The rest of the album features other various flavors from Nuggets unexceptionally, until the closing "The Fading Of My Mind" crosses Indian with Velvet Underground in a sticky, overdone noise fest. The first half of the album though, holds the more memorable tracks.
