Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog

1x****
Folk music of the drum circle variety has a hard time grabbing me, though the songs do a good job of establishing a mood. One of the more subdued is "Carousel"****, which while simple is built around a nice progression arpeggiated chords rather than a vamp in a given key with some verses and some kind of bridge thrown in. "House By The Sea" and "Boy With A Coin" have a dark, Appalachian quality, and some interesting percussion jumping in at the end of "House". "Wolves" is sparse and abstract enough to resemble Talking Heads or some Peter Gabriel. Other songs have a flavor of blues or country and are nicely played but would sound right at home on NPR.
