The Hellacopters - Grande Rock

2x****
Sometimes derivative is worse than others, and calling these songs derivative isn't a dismissal. Listening to this album is like listening to the lesser album tracks from Kiss and Grand Funk Railroad, which isn't the worst thing, but it's still a (alliteration coming) samey-sounding series of 1-4-5 power chord progressions, without the strong riffs. The first exception is "The Electric Index Eel"****, with a blazing riff like MC5 on speed, is far too short at 1:52. "The Devil Stole The Beat From The Lord"**** starts off under par, but the rest of the song moves along to a unexpectedly anthemic chorus. "Venus In Force" is better than most with some keyboard added to an "All Along The Watchtower" progression. "Paul Stanley" is pretty hilarious in its obvious imitation. And some songs, "Welcome To Hell, "Paul Stanley", and "5 Vs. 7", sound like they are slowed down just for some variety to the point where the tempo is boring.
