Dinosaur Jr. - Hand It Over

1x****
Basically a Jay Mascis solo album, the songs here seem longer than they actually are, maybe a function of their complexity, awkward flow, or heavy production. "I Don't Think" starts uncharacteristically heavy, but ends more typically pop. "Never Bought It" has a prominent flute part, but flows better, while "I'm Insane" sounds a bit thrown together with the trumpet and tempo changes. "Nothin's Goin On" has a feel similar to "Feel the Pain", while "Mick" is also similar 90's Dinosaur Jr, though the latter has an interesting coda. "Can't We Move This" and "Alone" have a similar atypically heavy, minor sound; both straightforward and J's guitar is sufficiently wankaphonic. "Sure Not Over You" has an interesting swing feel, and a memorable chorus. "Loaded"**** is oddly constructed, with verses that sound like the bridge, and starting with the chorus, which has a big rhythmic hook. "Alone" is so heavy it's a dirge that would make Neil Young proud. "Gettin Rough" is an interesting experiment of typical J Mascis song structure played on banjo. "Gotta Know" is "Sure Not Over You" but without the hooks. While consistently not a bad album, the songs being weaker than previous songs makes remembering these songs familiar but not a joyous occasion.
